i want the culture

June 10, 2008 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Entertaining the Masses, Voices of the Past.

Oh, for the love of history, I wish I was in D.C., so I could see the show Nixon's Nixon before it closes toward the end of June. I couldn't catch it while I was there for my vacation trip… Ugh. What a brilliant show! It portrays what might've happened on the eve of his resignation, as Nixon and Kissinger sat in the Oval Office. Nixon has comical conversations with world leaders, and considers the consqunces of his actions during Watergate. Shows like this don't creep up on the masses of a Southern city. Instead of watching history or learning history, the South chooses to simply sweep it under the rug and try to forget about it. Southern cultures usually choose to keep those revolving around food, family, and country music. Those are great! However, life can't be contained in just a small box, even with just the food. I love barbecue, but, there is more food for the palate to enjoy!

OK, I'm stepping off my soapbox. End of rant. I guess that is all for now.

ti-i-ime

June 10, 2008 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Ins-and-Outs, Social Quandaries.

So, despite having Hootie and the Blowfish's tune rolling through my mind as I'm desperately wishing for more hours in the day, I am trying to figure out how to consolidate the things that I'm currently doing to make time for what I need to be doing. There are must-do items, such as studying, which is sort of required for class… Well, not sort of, it is. I'm just really not motivated right now. I remember feeling like this last summer. There is something about summer that is very ill-motivating about studying and schoolwork. One of the main problems is that my first week of work fell right at the beginning of the semester, which means I'm double-studying.

I could be a complete recluse. However, I've done that for the past year. Since I returned for graduate school, all I have done is work for graduate school. And the time I spend NOT on graduate school isn't necessarily out and about amidst the city… it's usually spent chatting with out-of-town friends through various mediums of internet or phone. I have intentionally not spent time out and about, because I knew that my time here would most likely be temporary (or to my hope at least). I did not want to vest myself into anything that would be painful to leave behind. It was hard to leave before… even more heart-wrenching to leave D.C. when I did… and I just don't want to experience that again. I yearn for a more peaceful move next time I leave: one in which I only have to say goodbye to a few people. Besides, the other day, I actually had someone still think I was in D.C. Oh, if only… and maybe soon.

The Spielmaster loves the South and wrote the most amazing post about the South… because most of you can't read her blog because it is protected, I'm stealing her Whitman quote… She wrote:

O magnet-South! O glistening perfumed South! my South!
O quick mettle, rich blood, impulse and love! good and evil! O all dear to me!
—Walt Whitman

The South. My South. What is it about the southeasterly reaches of this country that puts such an irresistible call on the people who call it home, either by address, or history, or both?

While I can't necessarily say that I feel at home here, it is my home in some regard… It is home, because it is my family. It is home, because it is history. However, it conflicts with the desires of my heart, with the character of my being. It's at battle with my mind, and at war with my fighting spirit. I feel like I can't be who I truly want to be here. But, is it all about location, location, location? Or is it something else that is holding me back?

I feel like a lack of plans continue to hold me back. And, that for the sake of the argument continue to make me feel like I have no time to make good and wise decisions. These decisions can impact the future. Or a lack of decision or poor decision can destroy my future, or make a negative impact on my future. It's such a give or take. And without a plan, or anything kindly resembling a plan, I feel completely lost. I feel like a traveler on the interstate headed north without a destination, with no map, on a highway without signs. Who knows when I'll be able to stop for a rest? Or better yet, to fuel up for the next leg of the trip (that is, if I'll can afford it… haha). I'm in limbo. And in limbo, time feels eternal.

droughts in the south

February 5, 2008 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Political Slants, Sweet Home Alabama.

Today, a story on NPR bothered me quite a bit. NPR enlightened its audience on the droughts in Georgia, and the likely possibility that all outdoor pools will not be allowed to be filled this upcoming summer if the drought continues

I'm upset with this story for a number of reasons. Most of the Deep South states suffered from drought conditions for the past two summers. Furthermore, most of these states took precautions to conserve water. Plants died. Lakes were incredibly low. Residents were only allowed certain days of the week to water their lawn or wash their car, ONLY before 8 a.m., or after 7 p.m. Fines were imposed on those households who went beyond their water allowances. In the state of Alabama, citizens did everything possible to conserve water.

In the story on NPR, it said that many Georgia residents, specifically north of Atlanta, disregarded the suggestions to conserve water. First of all, they DISREGARDED it. And, why wasn't it MANDATED to conserve water, as it was in other states?

Then, after the major water conservation areas in Georgia were almost dry, Georgia asked other states for water! These states, Alabama included, didn't have it to share.

Should Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and others be punished for the flamboyant ignorance and disregard of Georgians? NO. I hate it for the state, but this entire drought issue's severity should be blamed on the administration of Georgia, and their Governor should have paid attention to the state's need. Furthermore, he should have been a better leader by implicating those who were in violation of conservation guidelines.

It may sound harsh and apathetic, but I spent an entire summer and beyond trying to conserve as much water as possible, as did many others in this and other states. Other states in the region should not have to suffer on behalf of such disregard. And, if Georgia didn't conserve in the first place, maybe a pool-less summer will teach them a lesson from their own poor behavior.

a bit of gloating

January 8, 2008 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Everything Football.

I'm sorry. I just have to do this. I'm THRILLED at the fact that LSU beat Ohio State for the BCS National Championship. I believe that makes the fourth national championship for the SEC in BCS history (Tennessee in 1999, LSU in 2004, Florida in 2005, and LSU in 2007). Do I normally cheer for LSU? Good heavens, no. I hate LSU, and Les Miles for that matter. But, if an SEC team can shut up a conference like the Big 10, I'm a happy camper.

Nothing beats the sound of the SuperDome cheers of "SEC! SEC! SEC!" Because, truth be told, and it has continually remained truth: the SEC is the best conference in the nation. Take it from Kirk Herbstreit or from the BCS National Championship… the SEC is #1 in the land. Geaux SEC!

good god’amighty

December 3, 2007 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Everything Football.

Well, well, well. Good things are still happening. The bowl games are up, and well, as I guessed, an SEC team is playing the national championship game. So, come on LSU and Les Miles, don't screw the pooch on this one. You've GOTTA annihilate Ohio State. Why? Just to prove that the SEC is all-powerful.

And, in curve ball news, 'Bama is headed for the Independence Bowl. I just hope we don't lose it… because that would make our 6-6 current season a losing season. So, here's to 'Bama not messing it up either. We need as many SEC wins as possible.

Other SEC teams in bowl games this year include: Mississippi State, Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and Georgia. I probably should've just said the only teams in the SEC without bowl bids are South Carolina, Ole Miss and Vandy. That's 9 teams… out of 12, or 75% of our conference in a bowl game. Now, that's a powerhouse conference!

With all that said, and this is the only time I'll say things like this… ROLL TIDE ROLL! Go State! C-A-T-S Cats, Cats, Cats! War Eagle! Go Vols (I think I just vomited a little in my mouth)! Go Hogs! Let's go Gators! Go Dawgs! and GEAUX TIGERS!

early presents

December 1, 2007 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Everything Football.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas New Year's Day! The #1 & #2 teams have now bitten the dust, LSU won the SEC championship which will rank them higher, Georgia will move up… it's looking an awful lot like an SEC team will be playing for the national title, and I couldn't be happier!!

Like I've said before… The SEC is the best conference in the country. And, I say, BRING IT!

i hate rocky top!

October 20, 2007 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Everything Football, Sweet Home Alabama.

Well, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, quite possibly most of the state of Alabama as the University of Alabama just took out the University of Tennessee, one of 'Bama's biggest (in my opinion THE biggest) rivalries.

Hey, Lee Corso & Kirk Herbstreit, how do you like that?!?! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

Hey Vols, hey Vols! We just beat the hell out of you! Rammer jammer, yellow hammer, give 'em hell Alabama!!!

The only thing that I can say for this is… Oh. My. Redneck. I swear, it's not like this all over the South, just the "special" places.

I've got fifty bucks that puts that photo at a NASCAR racing event…

rehab

October 11, 2007 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Leg-Slappin' Fun.

As Amy Winehouse says, ‘They try to make me to go rehab, and I said, no, no, no.’ Apparently, the following fella went to rehab ‘down there in Alabamer’ [which clearly means he's not from the state, right?] and says that he will not do cocaine… however, he will drink that Tequila, and his girlfriend better watch out. This clip was TOO hilarious to not share.

Ahh, old videos, southern accents, and horrific senses of style… well, as Forrest Gump said, ‘they go together like peas and carrots.’

faith of the masses

September 19, 2007 by the.muse, under All Things Considered Southern, Everything Football, Sweet Home Alabama.

Because the ‘Bama Nation has rallied together, I had to share one of my favorite blogs as of late… ChurchofSaban.com.

Seriously, it’s absolutely HYSTERICAL! I love the writing… Take for instance some wording from a post about the Alabama/Arkansas game:

Brothers and sisters in Saban,

Tonight, I sensed much fear at The Temple. I can understand why you may have had fear in your hearts; for so long, false leaders have buoyed your spirit, only to dash your hopes. However, you should not have fear as you have in the past, for it is written, “Fools! Do not doubt me as you doubted the one that came before me, for he was but a child, but I am a man. (1st Moore 3:12-13).

In fact, the glorious events of this evening were foretold in the Great Saban’s sermon to the believers at Fort Deposit. Reading from the Book of the Process, chapters 17-19:

“And after they ate together, the Teacher said, ‘Come close, my friends, and I will tell you of a day of triumph yet to come. It is a day where the sun will burn bright, and then be covered by the darkest cloud…but it will burn through the cloud, and be brighter than ever.’

And one of the followers said, ‘Teacher, tell us, why will the sun burn through the clouds? In the past, when the clouds came, the rain was sure to follow.’ And the Great Leader said, ‘Verily, the present is not the past.’

And he continued his story, saying, ‘A great battle will be had between my followers and the poor pigs from the desolate lands west of the Great River. They will be led by a man of great distinction, for he is more Beast than man. He will know not fear nor pain, and the strikes of my forces shall not harm him, but will bounce off him like the arrow that strikes the armor. His armies shall be pushed back, and our victory will look sure, but I will know that victory is not sure. The Beast shall rally his men, and they shall cry, ‘We shall take this day!’ But know well, my children, I will tell my general, ‘This is your time,’ and he shall know it is his time, and he shall fight like we have not yet seen him fight before. Victory shall be tasted by all who follow me, and verily I say to you, you all shall fall upon your knees and praise me this day.’

One of them said, ‘But Teacher, we already praise you.’ And he said, “Child, you praise me now as the farmer praises the vine that is newly planted. He knows that it will bear fruit, but he has not yet seen the fruit. You have seen my vine; after this victory, you shall know my fruit.

Now, this has taken fandom to an entirely new realm.

There is also the writing of my favorite ‘Bama football blog: RollBamaRoll.com. They have game difficulty ranked according to Bocephus’s albums [that's Hank Williams, Jr. to all those non-Southerners]. It’s genius. :)

Also, loosing to Croom will get you fired…

And, finally, one UT fan is claiming horrific details about the program in Knoxville. We can only hope that it’s completely true. :) RTR!
