Answering machine picks up…
"Hi… this is Emily. I'm sorry that I've missed you. I will be unavailable through December 6, working on an indepth analysis of propaganda on site with Benito Mussolini. Following that, I will be working within black communities to interview about ethnonationalism through December 12. Please leave me a message, and I'll try to get back to you before Christmas."
Well, it seemed more interesting than telling you about research papers. Ah, such the life of an aspiring historian. Only a little while longer…
humor me…
PLEASE tell me how a man can get 69 years for killing his hunter buddy, but Vice President Cheney can get off scott-free after shooting a man in the face while hunting!!! Sometimes I don't get justice politics.
And seriously, can this photo be any more disturbing???
Because it's only a funnier way to remember this hilarious story, here's a few Daily Show clips that made the story even better.
And, don't forget… don't let your kids go hunting with the vice president… he'll shoot them in the face.

civic nationalism?
There is one reason why I love graduate school, and it is because it is a forum for all types of ideas and exchange. It also comes with perks and privileges, one of those being that we get to meet great minds. In tonight's case, it was the great grandson of a great mind and leader. This evening, our class got to hear a presentation from Antoine Malamoud, great grandson of Leon Blum, who served two terms as Prime Minister of France pre- and post-World War II.
Although his French accent was thick, he offered a great perspective of history, from the family side of it all instead of just what the papers say. He explained that Blum's troubles lay in the fact that he was French, socialist, and Jewish. In fact, he was warned by Parliament that his religious background would cause trouble, although he was not religious at all, and his marriage was out of respect to the traditions of his family. Malamoud was funny and charming. My favorite part of the lecture was when he said that the French laugh at the concept of nationalism and consider the idea as offensive… much like the thought of Nazism. He also called the ideology behind civic nationalism ironic. And then he laughed… but he was completely serious.
After class, he joined us for our end-of-the-semester dinner, and I got the chance to sit next to him and hear all sorts of things about France. He encouraged me to visit not once, twice, but three times. He said the first time I can see the "museum" that is Paris. The next trip should be to see the modern side of Paris. However, on the third trip, he'd show me the real Paris… the busy traffic… where the riots took place. You know, everyday Paris.
I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to hear from someone of great privilege and heritage. I definitely will not forget this class. It's an experience that I'd only be able to have exactly where I am, and not wherever I'd wish to be.
something missing…
There's something missing in the world, and I can pinpoint it: there's no Daily Show right now because of the writers' strike. I just wish these media moguls would ante up to the demands, because it's fair. And, it's just… fair. No more explanation needed.
Enjoy this clip where the writers have made sure to keep their craft while still ripping on the insanity of the moguls who can't just give in a few extra dollars.
Some call Stewart & Colbert's absence "bad for democracy." I think I would agree…
on biting…
I was always told to never bite the hand that fed me. And well, I don't really want to rehash any kind of talk about the Alabama/Auburn game because of its lackluster. However, there was a HILARIOUS part of the game that I totally forgot about, and I just had to share. This is what happens in the SEC when a player gets too close to a dog trained to attack and enforce crowd control (it happened earlier at Georgia this year, too):
Roll Tide anyway…
to never remembering…
I just realized that I hadn't posted since Alabama played Tennessee in October. That's sad to say… but at the same time, I have to admit that there hasn't really been anything to talk about in regards to Alabama football. And for me, I've been so busy that I haven't had time to comment on anything else.
Tonight was the famed Iron Bowl – the annual state rivalry game that gives bragging rights to its winner and their fans for the next year. Well, for the past 5 years, Auburn has won the Iron Bowl, and Alabama… well, we're on our third coach within those 5 years. Sadly to say, we're playing with some horrible recruits from our former coach Mike Shula (see: John Parker Wilson, much of the offensive line, and some of the special teams). And, our new coach, Nick Saban, has inherited the lack of passion with which these players have played. They lack discipline just like Shula did. And well… the games that we've won have been much of our own luck considering the roller coaster that is the 2007 Crimson Tide.
But you know what?! This year's game wasn't that big of a deal to lose. You know why? Alabama was considered a MAJOR underdog and it was foretold that we would be decimated. Well, the final score was 17-10, in favor of Auburn. This "amazing" Auburn team was supposed to overwhelm Alabama, but I saw none of that. This year's game, in the words of my sister-in-law, was a 'snoozer.' And she's right… I won't remember ANY of this game, except for the fact that Auburn won their 6th straight. So, whooptidoo… such an exciting game… oh wow. I wanted to sleep the entire game.
So, here's to a game that no one will remember in 10 years because it was absolutely boring.
