start me up

No matter who you are, there is one thing on which people must agree:
The Rolling Stones is one of the greatest bands of all time. THIS is what you call a SuperBowl Halftime Show. It’s about time they attempt to reach the masses (who doesn’t know ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’ or ‘Start Me Up’), and not some niche market.

And if I must say, the boys are looking pretty good to be so much older nowadays. Mick’s pulling some crazy moves, and I’ve never enjoyed the Stones quite this much – except I swear, I’ve never noticed that mad lisp he’s got with the ‘r’.

Commercials aren’t too bad. But, I haven’t (and won’t) watched much of the game. I’m pulling for the Seahawks, just based on Shaun Alexander’s days back at ‘Bama. Based on the few that I’ve seen, I can’t wait to see the launch of the new Lorne Michaels’ show, ‘Sons & Daughters’. It looks absolutely hysterical, just based on the little girl. And ‘The Producers’ proved that any Hitler joke is probably a funny joke.

As for my studies, I’m off to hit the books, yet again. I can’t get no satisfaction. :)

Addendum: What the crap is up with the code black on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’? Did they get some trauma patient with a bomb implanted or something??? I’ve watched the show all of 3 times, I think, but now, I’m gonna have to watch it. This can’t be good for my studies… Dang you television, and your suspense.

‘we’re not imbreds’

When you are born and reared in the state of Alabama, there are always claims that we ‘branch back into the family tree.’ I’ve always regarded it as complete untruth. Well, that is, until today.

It seems that Alabama has a significant political hero that has given the urban legend much credibility. Take for example one of the staements in an article I read for my Alabama political history seminar… The article states the analysis of the Ku Klux Klan influence in the 1926 guberatorial and US senate elections. And, who won the election in 1926? David Bibb Graves, or as all Alabamians know him, Bibb Graves. Political office was apparent through his bloodline. As a graduate of the University of Alabama, UA later dedicated a building to him in his honor.

Now, a reading from the article:

Making a similar appeal was Bibb Graves, an apostle of progressive causes throughout a long political career. His wife and first cousin, Dixie Bibb Graves, also won considerable press attention and built a network of activist women that benefited her husband when she headed the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs and lobbied for woman suffrage, child-labor reform, prohibition, and compulsory education.

Strangely enough, many resources that tell of Governor Bibb Graves don’t mention his marriage. But, the state website’s bio did: “Returning to Montgomery, he established a law practice and married his cousin, Dixie Bibb, on October 10, 1900.”

Perhaps more humorous… Even though he married his first cousin (I really still can’t get over this), the University named the Education building after him. So, we’re supposed to learn from this man’s social or political qualities… Let’s just hope for the sake of us all, the University is mimicking the political path. But, you just never know.

Wow. Who knew that Alabama really is that messed up. I suppose I no longer have the right to defend the pure breeding practices (except of course, for my own family) of “Alabama the Beautiful.”

As a graduate student, you might not know that one can spend an unordinary amount of time in the library. No, it’s true. So true in fact, that one of the librarian’s has remembered my name, and proceeds to say hi every time. It does make it easier when you’re leaving to see her to check out.

Well, she noticed how much time I was spending at the library… and how irritated I was by inappropriate library mannerisms (Hello! You’re in a library… Have some respect, and shut your mouth!). She suggested a private study room (which Sterne has tons of). So, I check one out. They’re available for 3 hour time slots. So, study rooms become part of my habit now… You can keep your things locked up inside (which is nice, since I have this new 12″ powerbook).

Well, last week, when I came in, she noticed that my account had me listed as a graduate student, and then informed me that since I’m here so much, I can check out the carrel for an entire semester. I almost passed out. It was the greatest news! So, now, I’ve got this snazzy carrel all to myself the entire semester, and can keep things here, put things on the corkboard, and it lasts until May.

Yes, I’m a complete nerd… working in my nerdery. And let me tell you… I’ve heard it’s a complete turn-on for the fellas.

If only… Apparently, being smart and an overachiever is slightly appalling. But, I have to be honest: I really can’t help it… It’s in my blood. If I try to ignore it, it just gets worse. So, you’re just gonna have to forgive me.

Hi. I’m an overachieving nerd…
